NY Currents Clip: Equipping GL Homeowners with Sustainable Shoreline Practices (September 2019)

Equipping Great Lakes Homeowners with Sustainable Shoreline Practices After widespread flooding along the southern shore of Lake Ontario in 2017, shoreline properties were at risk of destruction from high water and powerful waves. Lake Ontario property owners and managers learned about sustainable shoreline protection at a NYSG-initiated workshop In 2018, New York Sea Grant (NYSG) designed a workshop to educate shoreline property owners on sustainable and innovative shoreline protection options NYSG presented a workshop, at which Lake Ontario shoreline property owners were provided with an array of shoreline protection options and covered the permitting process associated with these types of projects. Also, property owners were offered guidance on selecting and working with shoreline contractors. The workshop served as a kick starter for creating awareness and use of natural and nature-based shoreline establishment in the Great Lakes. For more stories, visit nyseagrant.org/CurrentsClips
